Tambi\u00e9n retienen el gas de efecto invernadero de manera excepcionalmente larga, durante varios siglos. As\u00ed informan los investigadores de la Universidad Austral de Chile en Valdivia y de la Universidad de Oxford en el diario en l\u00ednea \u00abPLoS ONE\u00bb. Roc\u00edo Urrutia-Jalabert y sus colegas han estudiado el Parque Nacional Alerce Andino, no lejos de Puerto Montt, un t\u00edpico bosque en el que domina el cipr\u00e9s patag\u00f3nico (Fitzroya cupressoides). De hasta 50 metros de altura, esta con\u00edfera alcanza un di\u00e1metro de tronco de hasta cinco metros y puede llegar a alcanzar m\u00e1s de 3600 a\u00f1os de antig\u00fcedad. Solo los superan en longevidad los pinos Bristlecone (Pinus longaeva), que crecen en zonas monta\u00f1osas secas de California, Utah y Nevada, en Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, entre los \u00e1rboles que forman bosques densos, el cipr\u00e9s patag\u00f3nico tiene el r\u00e9cord de longevidad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Pero desde que los inmigrantes de Europa descubrieron lo hermosa y duradera que era la madera del cipr\u00e9s patag\u00f3nico, este \u00e1rbol llega en raras ocasiones a viejo. El hecho de que se declarara monumento natural de Chile en 1976 no ha supuesto una protecci\u00f3n muy eficaz. La explotaci\u00f3n de los cipreses ya talados o \u00a0muertos sigui\u00f3 siendo legal.Resultaba por tanto demasiado tentador responder de manera activa a una demanda sostenida. La Uni\u00f3n Internacional para la Conservaci\u00f3n de la Naturaleza (UICN) coloc\u00f3 el cipr\u00e9s patag\u00f3nico, con raz\u00f3n, en la Lista Roja de Especies Amenazadas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Con el fin de medir con exactitud el tronco y la copa de los \u00e1rboles \u00a0los cient\u00edficos utilizan \u00e1rboles talados ilegalmente. A partir de estos datos se pudo estimar la biomasa de cipreses \u00a0vivos. Seg\u00fan sus c\u00e1lculos el bosque examinado contiene hasta 517 toneladas de carbono por hect\u00e1rea en forma de madera. Estos bosques de cipreses situados en la vertiente sur de los Andes de Chile \u00a0se encuentran por tanto entre los bosques que contienen las m\u00e1s importantes reservas madereras del mundo con una igualmente alta capacidad de almacenamiento de di\u00f3xido de carbono.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A causa de la pobreza del suelo, \u00a0drenados por alrededor de 6.000 mil\u00edmetros de lluvia al a\u00f1o, el crecimiento anual de los \u00e1rboles es muy limitado, a pesar de la suavidad del clima. La acumulaci\u00f3n de grandes cantidades de madera, por tanto, solamente es posible debido a la extrema lentitud de su reciclaje. En el bosque de cipreses en cuesti\u00f3n, la esperanza de vida media de la madera se sit\u00faa entre 539-640 a\u00f1os. Estos c\u00e1lculos toman en consideraci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n al haya y a otros \u00e1rboles que florecen bajo la sombra del gran cipr\u00e9s. Tomando en cuenta \u00fanicamente al cipr\u00e9s, el resultado es un promedio de vida de casi 1400 a\u00f1os. Las selvas tropicales donde crecen principalmente los cipreses de Patagonia se distinguen as\u00ed por el hecho de que almacenan una gran cantidad de di\u00f3xido de carbono durante per\u00edodos muy largos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">El balance de carbono de los bosques v\u00edrgenes se compensa en el largo plazo: durante la fotos\u00edntesis los \u00e1rboles procesan el di\u00f3xido de carbono del aire para producir madera, entre otros elementos. Tarde o temprano, la madera muerta se degrada por animales y microorganismos y el CO2 absorbido originalmente es de nuevo liberado. Protegido durante un largo tiempo de la actividad humana, el cipr\u00e9s patag\u00f3nico crece en laderas inaccesibles de las monta\u00f1as del sur de los Andes. Los investigadores dirigidos por Roc\u00edo Urrutia-Jalabert, por tanto, exigen no s\u00f3lo cambios legales para una mejor protecci\u00f3n futura de los bosques milenarios contra \u00a0los incendios y la tala ilegal. Tambi\u00e9n abogan por promover la regeneraci\u00f3n de los \u00a0cipreses en las colinas costeras, donde los densos bosques han sido quemados durante siglos. En el amplio valle que se extiende entre las colinas y los Andes, casi nada queda de las antiguas selvas tropicales. Sin embargo, en algunos lugares los cipreses podr\u00edan volver a crecer gradualmente.
