As\u00ed lo confirman los cient\u00edficos del Centro Nacional de Datos de Hielo y Nieve (NSIDC) y de la NASA, que han recreado en un v\u00eddeo la evoluci\u00f3n de esta masa helada desde septiembre de 2015 hasta marzo de 2016.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"w620 noborde\">\u00a0Cada a\u00f1o la capa de agua helada que flota sobre el oc\u00e9ano \u00c1rtico y sus mares vecinos se derrite durante la primavera y el verano, reduciendo su extensi\u00f3n. Despu\u00e9s, durante el oto\u00f1o y el invierno ocurre el proceso contrario y se expande hacia el sur, alcanzando su m\u00e1ximo entre febrero y abril.<\/p>\n<p>El pasado 24 de marzo la capa de hielo \u00e1rtico alcanz\u00f3 los 14,52 millones de kil\u00f3metros cuadrados, un nuevo r\u00e9cord de extensi\u00f3n m\u00ednima invernal, la m\u00e1s peque\u00f1a registrada desde que los sat\u00e9lites comenzaron a tomar datos de la zona en 1979. El a\u00f1o pasado el dato fue ligeramente superior, con 14,54 millones de kil\u00f3metros cuadrados. As\u00ed lo han confirmado cient\u00edficos del <a href=\"http:\/\/nsidc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Centro Nacional de Datos de Hielo y Nieve<\/a> (NSIDC, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s) y de la NASA, que tambi\u00e9n han elaborado una animaci\u00f3n donde se muestra la evoluci\u00f3n del hielo \u00e1rtico desde la extensi\u00f3n m\u00ednima del verano pasado hasta marzo de este a\u00f1o.<\/p>\n<p>Los 13 m\u00e1ximos m\u00e1s peque\u00f1os en los registros por sat\u00e9lite han ocurrido en los \u00faltimos 13 a\u00f1os, y el nuevo m\u00ednimo hist\u00f3rico sigue a las temperaturas elevadas r\u00e9cord de los pasados diciembre, enero y febrero a escala global, incluido el \u00c1rtico.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abEl calor atmosf\u00e9rico probablemente contribuy\u00f3 a esta medida m\u00e1xima m\u00e1s baja, con temperaturas de hasta 6 grados cent\u00edgrados por encima de la media en los bordes de la bolsa de hielo marino, donde es m\u00e1s delgado\u00bb, dice Walt Meier, cient\u00edfico del hielo marino en el Centro de Vuelo Espacial Goddard de la NASA en Greenbelt (EE UU).<\/p>\n<p>Los patrones de viento en el \u00c1rtico durante enero y febrero tambi\u00e9n fueron desfavorables para el crecimiento del hielo porque trajeron el aire caliente desde el sur y frenaron la expansi\u00f3n de la cobertura de hielo. \u00abPero lo que probablemente va a desempe\u00f1ar un papel m\u00e1s importante en la evoluci\u00f3n futura de la extensi\u00f3n m\u00e1xima del \u00c1rtico es el calentamiento de las aguas oce\u00e1nicas\u00bb, advierte Meier. \u00abSeguramente vamos a seguir viendo m\u00e1ximos invernales m\u00e1s peque\u00f1os en el futuro, porque, adem\u00e1s de un ambiente m\u00e1s c\u00e1lido, el mar tambi\u00e9n se ha calentado, y esto no permitir\u00e1 que el borde del hielo se ampl\u00ede hasta el sur como sol\u00eda hacer\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abAunque el alcance m\u00e1ximo del hielo marino puede variar mucho cada a\u00f1o dependiendo de las condiciones clim\u00e1ticas del invierno, estamos viendo una tendencia descendente significativa, que en \u00faltima instancia est\u00e1 relacionada con el calentamiento de la atm\u00f3sfera y los oc\u00e9anos\u00bb, a\u00f1ade el investigador.<\/p>\n<p>Desde 1979, esa tendencia ha dado lugar a una p\u00e9rdida de una capa de hielo marino en invierno de m\u00e1s de 1.605.700 kil\u00f3metros cuadrados, que es m\u00e1s del doble del tama\u00f1o de Texas, por ejemplo. Pero este r\u00e9cord no significa necesariamente que en verano tambi\u00e9n haya otro de extensi\u00f3n m\u00ednima, apuntan los expertos de la NASA. Las condiciones meteorol\u00f3gicas veraniegas tienen mayor impacto en el resultado de la fusi\u00f3n estacional del hielo que la extensi\u00f3n del m\u00e1ximo invernal. Las temperaturas c\u00e1lidas y las tormentas del verano hacen que el hielo se derrita r\u00e1pidamente, pero si el verano es fresco, se ralentiza la fusi\u00f3n de la masa helada.<\/p>\n<p>El hielo del \u00c1rtico desempe\u00f1a un papel clave en el mantenimiento de la temperatura de todo el planeta. Su superficie blanca refleja una luz solar que de otra manera ser\u00eda absorbida por el oc\u00e9ano. Este efecto es m\u00e1s relevante en verano, cuando el sol luce sobre el artico, que en invierno, cuando durante meses no amanece en el C\u00edrculo Polar \u00c1rtico.<\/p>\n<p>Fuente: NASA &#8211;
