{"id":18451,"date":"2016-05-19T09:00:39","date_gmt":"2016-05-19T12:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/patagoniambiental.com.ar\/?p=18451"},"modified":"2016-05-19T09:00:39","modified_gmt":"2016-05-19T12:00:39","slug":"cientificos-predicen-una-gran-perdida-de-hielo-de-un-enorme-glaciar-del-antartico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/patagoniambiental.com.ar\/info\/cientificos-predicen-una-gran-perdida-de-hielo-de-un-enorme-glaciar-del-antartico\/","title":{"rendered":"Cient\u00edficos predicen una gran p\u00e9rdida de hielo de un enorme glaciar del Ant\u00e1rtico"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"story-leaf-body\">\n<div class=\"story-leaf-txt-p\">\n<p>Las tasas actuales de cambio clim\u00e1tico podr\u00eda provocar inestabilidad en un glaciar ant\u00e1rtico importante, llevando en \u00faltima instancia a una subida del nivel del mar de m\u00e1s de 2 metros. \u00c9sta es la conclusi\u00f3n de un nuevo estudio que analiza el futuro del glaciar Totten, un importante glaciar en la Ant\u00e1rtida, que drena en una de las \u00e1reas de hielo m\u00e1s grandes del mundo, la plataforma de hielo de la Ant\u00e1rtida Oriental (SEIA, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s).<\/p>\n<p>Mediante el estudio de la historia de avances y retrocesos de Totten, los investigadores han descubierto que si el cambio clim\u00e1tico contin\u00faa sin cesar, el glaciar podr\u00eda cruzar un umbral cr\u00edtico durante el pr\u00f3ximo siglo, entrando en un periodo irreversible de muy r\u00e1pido retroceso. Esto causar\u00eda la retirada e hasta 300 kil\u00f3metros hacia el interior en los siglos siguientes y la liberaci\u00f3n de grandes cantidades de agua, contribuyendo a hasta 2,9 metros de subida global del nivel del mar.<\/p>\n<p>Se cree que la SEIA es relativamente estable haciendo frente al calentamiento global en comparaci\u00f3n con la capa de hielo mucho m\u00e1s peque\u00f1a en el oeste de la Ant\u00e1rtida, pero el glaciar Totten est\u00e1 yendo en contra de esa tendencia al perder grandes cantidades de hielo. La nueva investigaci\u00f3n revela que Totten puede ser a\u00fan m\u00e1s vulnerabl de lo que se pensaba anteriormente.<\/p>\n<p>El estudio, realizado por cient\u00edficos del Imperial College de Londres, en Reino Unido, e instituciones en Australia, Estados Unidos y Nueva Zelanda, se publica este mi\u00e9rcoles en &#8216;Nature&#8217;. El a\u00f1o pasado, el equipo descubri\u00f3 que en la actualidad hay agua caliente que circula por debajo de una porci\u00f3n flotante del glaciar que est\u00e1 causando m\u00e1s fusi\u00f3n de la que se podr\u00eda haber esperado.<\/p>\n<p>Su nueva investigaci\u00f3n se centra en la geolog\u00eda subyacente del glaciar y revela que si se retira otros entre 100 y 150 kil\u00f3metros, su frontal va a estar sentado en una plataforma inestable y esto podr\u00eda desencadenar un periodo de r\u00e1pido retroceso de los glaciares. Esto provocar\u00eda que se retirara casi 300 kil\u00f3metros hacia el interior desde la parte frontal actual en la costa.<\/p>\n<p>La retirada de esos 300 kil\u00f3metros hacia el interior puede llevar varios cientos de a\u00f1os, seg\u00fan el coautor del profesor Martin Siegert, codirector del Instituto Grantham en el Imperial College de Londres, quien matiza que una vez que el glaciar cruza el umbral hacia la regi\u00f3n inestable, la fusi\u00f3n ser\u00e1 imparable, al menos hasta que haya retrocedido hasta el punto donde la geolog\u00eda se vuelve m\u00e1s estable de nuevo.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abLa evidencia est\u00e1 pintando un cuadro de la Ant\u00e1rtida oriental mucho m\u00e1s vulnerable a un entorno de calentamiento de lo que pens\u00e1bamos -advierte&#8211;. Esto es algo que debe preocuparnos. El glaciar Totten est\u00e1 perdiendo hielo ahora y el agua caliente del oc\u00e9ano que est\u00e1 causando esta p\u00e9rdida tiene el potencial de impulsar tambi\u00e9n el glaciar de nuevo a un lugar inestable\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abEl glaciar Totten es s\u00f3lo una salida para el hielo de la capa de hielo de la Ant\u00e1rtida Oriental, pero podr\u00eda tener un impacto enorme. La capa de hielo de la Ant\u00e1rtida Oriental es, con mucho, la mayor masa de hielo en la Tierra, por lo que cualquier cambio peque\u00f1o tiene una gran influencia en todo el mundo\u00bb, subraya.<\/p>\n<p>Para descubrir la historia de los movimientos del glaciar Totten, el equipo analiz\u00f3 las rocas sedimentarias por debajo del glaciar mediante estudios geof\u00edsicos a\u00e9reos. Desde el registro geol\u00f3gico, influenciado por la erosi\u00f3n por el hielo m\u00e1s arriba, fueron capaces de entender la historia del glaciar que se remonta a millones de a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<p>Los investigadores encontraron que el glaciar ha retrocedido m\u00e1s r\u00e1pidamente sobre ciertas regiones inestables en el pasado. Sobre la base de esta evidencia, los cient\u00edficos creen que cuando el glaciar afecte a estas regiones se producir\u00e1 el mismo patr\u00f3n de r\u00e1pido retroceso.<\/p>\n<div
