Cada a\u00f1o se liberan millones de toneladas de este gas, uno de los principales causantes del\u00a0<b>cambio clim\u00e1tico<\/b>, que el pasado mes de abril alcanz\u00f3 una nueva m\u00e1xima concentraci\u00f3n hist\u00f3rica, 413,9 partes por mill\u00f3n (ppml). \u00bfY si se pudiera reciclar ese\u00a0<b>di\u00f3xido de carbono\u00a0<\/b>en productos de valor?<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-leaf-txt-p\" data-gtm-element-container=\"modulo-texto-link\">\n<p>Eso es precisamente lo que pretende un equipo de cient\u00edficos de la Universidad de Toronto, en Canad\u00e1, que ha logrado dise\u00f1ar un proceso estable y eficiente para<b>\u00a0convertir<\/b>\u00a0este gas de efecto invernadero en\u00a0<b>pl\u00e1stico<\/b>. Y para ello, usan\u00a0<b>energ\u00eda solar<\/b>.<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"story-leaf-body-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lavanguardia.com\/r\/GODO\/LV\/p5\/WebSite\/2018\/05\/23\/Recortada\/img_asanchezm_20170330-135809_imagenes_lv_terceros_istock-174943582-kNjF--656x408@LaVanguardia-Web.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"seedtag-gohan seedtag-adunit\">\n<div class=\"st-container\"><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption>(beijingstory \/ Getty Images\/iStockphoto)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cNuestra soluci\u00f3n resuelve dos problemas a la vez\u201d, afirma Pelayo Garc\u00eda de Arquer, investigador postdoctoral y coautor de este trabajo,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/360\/6390\/783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-gtm-element=\"container-child-link\">que recoge la revista Science<\/a>. \u201cPor un lado, como las energ\u00edas renovables no se pueden almacenar, en ocasiones se producen picos de producci\u00f3n que hay que asimilar y eso hace que las empresas de energ\u00edas renovables en ocasiones tengan incluso que pagar a consumidores para que usen esa energ\u00eda. Es una cuesti\u00f3n que resolver si pretendemos que las renovables se extiendan a\u00fan m\u00e1s. Y por otro lado, logramos convertir el CO2 en otro producto \u00fatil utilizando esos electrones, dando salida a esa producci\u00f3n en red\u201d, explica en una entrevista a Big Vang.<\/p>\n<p>El objetivo es capturar el CO2 de las centrales el\u00e9ctricas y las f\u00e1bricas -e incluso directamente de la atm\u00f3sfera alg\u00fan d\u00eda- y convertirlo usando una fuente de energ\u00eda renovable en\u00a0<b>etileno<\/b>, que es un producto qu\u00edmico muy habitual, precursor de muchos pl\u00e1sticos, como e polietileno, que es el m\u00e1s com\u00fan y del que se producen anualmente en todo el planeta 80 millones de toneladas.<\/p>\n<p>De hecho, en la actualidad ya existen procesos para filtrar y extraer CO2 de los gases invernadero, pero o bien son procesos inestables o bien no se obtiene un producto de valor que compense el coste de capturarlo. De ah\u00ed que los investigadores de Toronto se propusieran obtener un producto qu\u00edmico de valor, como el etileno, que haga atractivo para las empresas investir en la tecnolog\u00eda de captura de este gas.<\/p>\n<div class=\"story-leaf-despiece story-leaf-despiece-quotes\">\n<div class=\"story-leaf-despiece-title\">\n<p>\u201cEstamos muy motivados para desarrollar tecnolog\u00edas que nos ayuden a hacer realidad el desaf\u00edo global de un futuro carbono neutral\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Para ello, han utilizado un catalizador que han colocado sobre una capa porosa de tefl\u00f3n y encima han puesto grafito. Con esta f\u00f3rmula han logrado aumentar hasta 15 veces la estabilidad del catalizador en comparaci\u00f3n con los catalizadores previos. Adem\u00e1s de ser m\u00e1s estable, el proceso resulta tambi\u00e9n m\u00e1s eficiente, porque utilizan energ\u00eda solar para lograr la conversi\u00f3n. \u201cSomos capaces de convertir CO2 en etileno a unas eficiencias que no se hab\u00edan alcanzado nunca hasta ahora\u201d, afirma Garc\u00eda de Arquer.<\/p>\n<p>Por el momento, los investigadores han demostrado la conversi\u00f3n a escala de laboratorio y han logrado producir varios gramos de etileno en cada reacci\u00f3n. (Laura Pedersen\/ Engineering Strategic Communicat)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cQueremos que el ciclo sea energ\u00e9ticamente sostenible, que se puedan alcanzar las emisiones cero de carbono o incluso emisiones negativas, para lograr as\u00ed reducir la presencia de CO2 en la atm\u00f3sfera\u201d, concluye este investigador espa\u00f1ol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComo grupo, estamos muy motivados para desarrollar tecnolog\u00edas que nos ayuden a hacer realidad el desaf\u00edo global de un futuro carbono neutral\u201d, a\u00f1ade Ted Sargent, al frente del grupo de esta investigaci\u00f3n, en un comunicado.<\/p>\n<p>De hecho, con esta misi\u00f3n\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/co2cert.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-gtm-element=\"container-child-link\">decidieron participar<\/a>\u00a0en una competici\u00f3n mundial, el<a href=\"https:\/\/carbon.xprize.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-gtm-element=\"container-child-link\">\u00a0NRG Cosia Carbon XPrize<\/a>, dotada con 20 millones de d\u00f3lares, que desaf\u00eda a industria y cient\u00edficos a lograr formas de capturar las emisiones de CO2 en f\u00e1bricas y convertirlas en productos de valor, desde materiales para la construcci\u00f3n, hasta fueles de baja emisi\u00f3n, prote\u00ednas nutritivas o nanomateriales.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container-center\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MIJlCiZRhkk\" width=\"100%\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Convocado hace dos a\u00f1os, se presentaron 38 equipos de los cinco continentes de los que el panel de jueces de la competici\u00f3n ha elegido diez, entre ellos este proyecto de la Universidad de Toronto para obtener pl\u00e1sticos a partir de la poluci\u00f3n y la energ\u00eda solar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSi conseguimos escalar el proceso del laboratorio a una f\u00e1brica, podr\u00edamos eliminar el CO2 de la atm\u00f3sfera y tambi\u00e9n empezar a producir pl\u00e1sticos de forma m\u00e1s respetuosa con el medio ambiente\u201d, considera Garc\u00eda de Arquer. Las empresas podr\u00edan instalar estos catalizadores en sus instalaciones, dirigir hacia ellos el gas que producen como resultado de su actividad y obtener etileno. \u201cAdem\u00e1s de generar un ciclo de carb\u00f3n neutral, las empresas podr\u00edan incluso vender ese etileno a otras empresas, por lo que generar\u00edan valor\u201d,
