Investigadores de la Universidad de Harvard (EE UU) han concebido un sofisticado sistema que utiliza una bacteria modificada gen\u00e9ticamente para convertir la energ\u00eda solar en un combustible l\u00edquido. El enfoque, si confirma su rentabilidad, ayudar\u00eda a afrontar el desaf\u00edo energ\u00e9tico y a luchar contra el cambio clim\u00e1tico.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Los investigadores, encabezados por el qu\u00edmico estadounidense Daniel Nocera, han utilizado la energ\u00eda del Sol para obtener hidr\u00f3geno del agua (formada por dos \u00e1tomos de hidr\u00f3geno y uno de ox\u00edgeno). Con este hidr\u00f3geno, la bacteria modificada, de la especie Ralstonia eutropha, es capaz de convertir CO2, el principal gas responsable del calentamiento global, en un alcohol combustible, el isopropanol. Al ser l\u00edquido, podr\u00eda ser transportado mediante las infraestructuras actuales, subrayan los autores.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nocera lleva a\u00f1os acariciando una revoluci\u00f3n energ\u00e9tica planetaria. En 2009, fue considerado una de las 100 personas m\u00e1s influyentes del mundo por la revista Time como reconocimiento a sus avances hacia combustibles inspirados en la fotos\u00edntesis de las plantas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u201cLas c\u00e9lulas fotovoltaicas tienen un considerable potencial para satisfacer las futuras necesidades de energ\u00eda renovable, pero se necesitan m\u00e9todos eficientes y escalables para almacenar la electricidad intermitente que producen y poder implantar la energ\u00eda solar a gran escala\u201d, explican los autores hoy en la revista cient\u00edfica PNAS. Su sistema podr\u00eda ser ese anhelado almac\u00e9n de energ\u00eda solar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Otros equipos cient\u00edficos han llegado a m\u00e9todos similares, pero han necesitado acelerar las reacciones qu\u00edmicas con metales preciosos, como el platino y el indio, disparando los costes. El equipo de Nocera emplea como catalizadores metales abundantes en la Tierra, como el cobalto, logrando un rendimiento que triplica el de los mejores combustibles bioelectroqu\u00edmicos existentes, logrados por sistemas parecidos. Para los autores, es \u201cuna importante prueba de concepto\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00abTodav\u00eda no vamos a utilizar este sistema en nuestros coches. De momento, es solo un descubrimiento cient\u00edfico. Ahora tenemos que mejorar las ineficiencias para que sea comercial, aunque ya somos tan eficientes, o m\u00e1s, que la fotos\u00edntesis natural\u00bb, se\u00f1ala Nocera.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ninguna empresa se ha interesado todav\u00eda por el nuevo sistema. El a\u00f1o pasado, la multinacional estadounidense Lockheed Martin, un gigante de la industria aeroespacial y militar, compr\u00f3 uno de los anteriores productos del laboratorio de Nocera: una especie de hoja artificial que utiliza la energ\u00eda solar para separar el hidr\u00f3geno y el ox\u00edgeno del agua. El hidr\u00f3geno tambi\u00e9n se puede emplear como combustible, aunque hay pocas infraestructuras para facilitar su uso.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hace dos a\u00f1os, cient\u00edficos de la Universidad de Exeter (Reino Unido) y de la petrolera Shell modificaron los genes de otra bacteria, la Escherichia coli, para que fabricara di\u00e9sel a partir de \u00e1cidos grasos. El biocombustible, prometedor, tambi\u00e9n se enfrenta ahora a desaf\u00edos para su comercializaci\u00f3n, como su abaratamiento.
